The Dynamic Landscape: Women Transforming the World of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

In recent years, especially in the wake of the global health crisis, a wave of international projects has blossomed around the universally loved realms of food and wine. These initiatives have not only fostered delicious culinary creativity but also created strong networks connecting experts, chefs, producers, and aficionados worldwide. The result is a vibrant tapestry of global collaboration, driving us all toward a tastier and healthier "new normal."

One shining star in this movement is the Women in Olive Oil (WIOO) association, founded in the United States in April 2020. WIOO unites women from more than 40 countries, now boasting over 2,000 members as of 2024, and serves as a bridge for knowledge-sharing, professional development, and cross-border friendships, all woven together by the shared love of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). WIOO’s mission is to spark meaningful progress for women both individually and socially, leveraging the universal appeal and health benefits of olive oil as a catalyst for change.

This organization is about so much more than food—it’s a catalyst for gender equality and social evolution. Olive oil provides a common thread connecting vital areas such as nutrition, public health, education, fair trade, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. WIOO’s diverse community includes not just producers, but also chefs creating dazzling dishes like Panzanella and Caprese Salad, millers perfecting the art of pressing, scientists researching health benefits, exporters, retailers, and more. At the helm, Jill Myers—a visionary leader from Charlottesville, Virginia—guides WIOO with a commitment to community, cohesion, collaboration, and social stability.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: More Than a Simple Ingredient

Few foods embody the rich history and deep influence on human society quite like olive oil. While wine—think of celebrated labels like Chianti or Barolo—has long enjoyed the spotlight, extra-virgin olive oil is rooted in a uniquely feminine and nurturing mythology. The revered Greek goddess Athena bestowed the olive tree upon humanity, marking the birth of civilization and culinary progress. Today, the enduring groves of Tuscany, Puglia, and Andalusia echo this powerful heritage.

The olive tree’s evergreen leaves symbolize resilience and longevity, surviving everything from drought to salty coastal winds. Thanks to Athena’s legendary wisdom, people mastered the craft of transforming olives into the golden elixir we now cherish. This "liquid gold" enhances everything from bruschetta to seafood carpaccio, and its health properties—rich in polyphenols and antioxidants—are now championed by modern nutritionists worldwide.

As both a nurturing "Mother Goddess" and a "Warrior Goddess" inspiring art, literature, and philosophy, Athena’s legacy continues to empower women to lead, innovate, and nurture communities through the world of olive oil.

Athena’s Torch: Women Leading the Olive Oil Revolution

Today, Athena’s symbolism is at the heart of the olive oil sector’s response to new global challenges like climate change. Recent WIOO research—now bolstered by 2023 studies from the International Olive Council—confirms that women are the first and most vulnerable victims of natural disasters, facing up to 14 times higher risk than men. Yet, female leadership in areas such as education, healthcare, and family nutrition is vital for the resilience and sustainability of rural communities.

Despite comprising as much as 70% of the global agricultural workforce, women still face significant barriers in accessing land, capital, technology, and markets. Closing this gap is not just a matter of fairness—it’s key to unlocking greater food security, economic growth, and social progress. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, empowering women farmers could lift up to 150 million people out of hunger globally. WIOO, along with new groups like Women in Olive Oil Spain launched in 2023, is working to make this vision a reality by providing vital training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

As more women rise into leadership roles, they are setting new standards for quality EVOO production, pioneering sustainable farming practices, and mentoring the next generation of female olive oil experts.

Global Sisterhood: Women Advocating for Change in Olive Oil

Across continents, women’s olive oil networks are harnessing technology to fuel progress. Online platforms, from the WIOO Facebook and Instagram communities to regular webinars and virtual tastings, are connecting women from California to Sicily, sharing expertise on everything from olive oil pairing with Chianti Classico to organic farming in Andalusia. These efforts are making the world of olive oil more inclusive and innovative than ever before.

WIOO’s guiding philosophy—"women supporting women"—echoes the wisdom of Chilean author Isabel Allende:
"I can promise you that women working together—connected, informed, and educated—can bring peace and prosperity to this forsaken planet."

Italy’s National Association of Women of Oil and Pandolea (founded in Rome in 2003) continue to lead the way, welcoming everyone from producers to consumers, agronomists, researchers, chefs, and journalists. In 2024, these organizations are promoting innovative projects, such as olive oil tasting tours and culinary workshops in Tuscany and Puglia, and collaborating with Michelin-starred restaurants to elevate women’s roles in gastronomy.

Today, the world of EVOO is buzzing with female energy and ingenuity. From creating award-winning olive oils in Jaén and Ligurian Riviera to leading research on health and sustainability, women are ensuring their voices are heard, their talents are recognized, and their flavors are celebrated in kitchens and communities worldwide.
