Immerse Yourself in a Montalcino Summer: Jazz & Wine Sets an Unforgettable Atmosphere

For almost 25 years, Jazz & Wine has been the heartbeat of summer in Montalcino, offering a unique blend of smooth jazz and world-class wine. The festival’s spirit has never waned—not even during the pandemic—ensuring that the music always plays on in this picturesque Tuscan town.

With 24 years of history, the Jazz & Wine Festival is celebrated as Montalcino’s premier summer event. If you find yourself in this beautiful region, don’t miss the festival from July 20th to July 25th, 2021, where you can experience electrifying performances by renowned jazz artists like Stefano Bollani, Danilo Rea, Stefano di Battista, Emanuele Urso, Massimo Nunzi and Alex Britti. Their music comes alive in the captivating setting of Montalcino’s historic Fortezza.

The Interwoven Modern Story of Wine and Jazz in Montalcino

Today, wine festivals are often paired with cultural and artistic events, but 25 years ago the scene was far less diverse. Back then, Jazz & Wine pioneered a new approach, blending music and wine in an unprecedented celebration.

Rodolfo Maralli, Commercial Director of Tenute Banfi and President of the Banfi Foundation, shares his memories: “As a young jazz enthusiast from Rome, I was drawn to the lively concerts at Villa Celimontana. In my early years at Banfi, I crossed paths with Giampiero Rubei—a legendary music impresario and founder of the iconic Alexanderplatz jazz club in Rome. I proposed a bold idea: a jazz festival in Montalcino, where wine and music would dance together.”

Rubei was captivated by the vision, and together they launched the festival in 1998 with a roster of remarkable talent, though the audience was modest at first.

Set within the enchanting 14th-century Fortezza di Montalcino, the festival’s venue perfectly embodies the charm and vibrancy of a classic Tuscan village. Each year, the stage is graced by exceptional performers such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gino Paoli, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, and Ezio Bosso, enchanting audiences in an unforgettable atmosphere.

Attendance has grown steadily, and the event now fills the fortress with the buzz of excitement—though this year, safety measures mean reduced capacity. Still, the festival spirit shines as brightly as ever.

Why Jazz and Wine Make the Ultimate Pairing

When Maralli first shared his vision with Rubei, he noted, “Rock has beer, pop has cocktails—so jazz deserves wine, because both are born from improvisation and a willingness to break traditional boundaries.”

The Jazz & Wine Festival was the world’s first event to unite these two artistic realms, even inspiring similar celebrations in places like Napa Valley.

While the Umbria Jazz Festival offered a musical benchmark (with Heineken as sponsor), Montalcino’s festival set itself apart with its relentless pursuit of excellence in both music and the wine glass.

In another highlight for wine lovers, this year’s Brunello OFF 2021 delved into the acclaimed 2016 vintage. Discover more in Chats, Sensations and Recollections at Benvenuto Brunello OFF 2021.

Just as winemakers expertly blend grapes, the festival mixes diverse genres and artists—like Elio e Le Storie Tese, Luis Bacalov, and Incognito—echoing the complex layers of a fine Brunello.

Maralli sums it up: “There’s truly something for everyone—whether you’re savoring a glass of great wine or finding your groove in the music.” For him, the festival is the realization of a dream: fusing his passion for exceptional wine and world-class jazz.
